Patriotic Cupcake Toppers

With just a few days before the July 4th weekend, have you thought about how you were going to spruce up your treats to match the occasion? Here's one idea that is easy and took very little prep time. Make pinwheels out of patriotic-colored fondant using circle cookie cutters in various sizes and scoring each pinwheel line using a pastry scraper. Once you have created the number of circles you like, allow a few minutes for the circles to stiffen so the fondant pieces can be moved without bending, then begin connecting and overlapping the circles to create depth. Using a paintbrush, apply dabs of water where you would like the circles to bind. Toothpicks can be used to maintain balance in areas of the topper that are not laying flat on your work surface. Allow the cupcake toppers to dry overnight. When ready, top your cupcakes with a patriotic pinwheel topper.

This idea would also be great for any event. Just swap out the colors to match the theme of your party.

As for the idea, these pinwheel toppers were inspired by the Whippy Cake collections. Love their hair accessories and was so inspired that I had to find a way to create them in an edible form. Task accomplished!
